.TH CHECKSERVICE 1 "May 2000" "Linvision"
.SH NAME
checkservice \- checks the status of services on (remote) hosts
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B checkservice [\fIOPTIONS\fB]...
.BR
.SH DESCRIPTION
Checkservice will get its information about what to do from the combination
of a global configfile and host-specific files. It can scan either one host or
all hosts for which those host-specific configfiles are available.
Checkservice provides two types of scans that are configurable for every
separate service:
\fIsimple\fR and \fIextended\fR. For an \fIextended\fR service-check plugins
are used. These will thoroughly check if the service is REALLY working.
If no plugin is available for that service or the configuration for that
service is set to do a \fIsimple\fR check, Checkservice will perform a test
if the port/ports given for that service is/are open.

Checkservice provides three types of output:
.TP
\fBlogfiles\fR
Write the status of each service in a separate logfile for the specified host.
.TP
\fBstdout\fR
This is meant for the Checkservice php-script, the format is exactly like the
configfile but with the status at then end.
.TP
\fBmrtg\fR
Simple form of output: print a \fIzero\fR if the specified host is up and all
the services are working correctly, or a \fIone\fR if one of the services is
failing the test or the host is down. This number is followed by the localtime
(see also:
.BR perlfunc
(1p) for the format).
.SH OPTIONS
.TP
\fB-t\fR, \fB--targethost=STR\fR
Specify the host to scan. A configfile for that host must be available in
<configdir>/hosts. If \fISTR\fR is '*', all hosts will be scanned for
which configfiles are available.
.TP
\fB-c\fR, \fB--configdir=PATH\fR
Specifies configdir, (default: /etc/checkservice).
.TP
\fB-l\fR, \fB--logdir=PATH\fR
Logdirectory where host-specific logs should be kept. If PATH is '-', Checkservice
will print to stdout (default).
.TP
\fB-m\fR, \fB--mrtg\fR
Generate only a 0 (host is up & all services are ok) or 1 to stdout, followed
by localtime. Using this option, logdir specification will be ignored.
\fBNB\fR. The targethost option is compulsory!
.TP
\fB-h\fR, \fB--help\fR
Show this help and exit.
.TP
\fB-v\fR, \fB--version=MODE\fR
Show version (if MODE is 'short', only version number will be printed) and
exit.
.SH FILES
.TP
\fB/etc/checkservice/config\fR
Global configfile.
.TP
\fB/etc/checkservice/*.mail\fR
Template mail files, in which the following variables can be used:
.PP
.RS
.I %t
time server/service went down.
.br
.I %h
host that either is unreachable or has a failing service.
.br
.I %s
service that went down (not available in the host unreachable-template).
.br
.I %p
portset defined for service.
.br

The subject is also configurable by adding a 'Subject: .....' line on top
of the template, it will be stripped from the mail's contents. Variable
substitution is also performed to that Subject-line.
.RE
.TP
\fB/etc/checkservice/hosts/*\fR
Host-specific configfiles. Look at
.BR checkservice (5)
for the format. Note that directory structures are allowed to create a
sort of groups (and subgroups, etc).

Checkservice is a simple and fast service checking perl script. It is

something is wrong. Checkservice features grouping of hosts, very

.TH CHECKSERVICE 5 "May 2000" "Linvision"
.SH NAME
checkservice \- checks the status of services on (remote) hosts
.SH DESCRIPTION
Checkservice uses host-specific configfiles which are located in
\fI/etc/checkservice/hosts/\fR. This means that for every hosts
precisely can be specified, which service to check, what its short
and long name are, what portset should be scanned, if extended,
simple or no scan should be performed (method) and optionally which action
to undertake when the service is failing.
.br
The name of the file represents the host that should be scanned and
the contents of the configfile instructs Checkservice what services to
check on that host.
.SH "SYNTAX"
The syntax used for every line in the configfiles is:
.PP
.RS
<key>=<field1>:<field2>:...
.RE
.PP
.br
The fields are an ordered list, so watch out! To configure a certain
service, use:
.PP
.RS
service=\fBportset\fR:\fBshortname\fR:\fBmethod\fR:\fBlongname\fR\fI[:action]\fR
.RE
.PP
.br
Where \fIportset\fR represents one or more ports separated by a comma (no
spaces allowed), \fIshortname\fR the short name of the service (mosty the one used in
/etc/services), \fImethod\fR the check-method that should be used ('n' [None], 's'
[Simple] or 'x' [eXtended]), an
arbitrary \fIlongname\fR (used in the PHP-status page) and an optional
\fIaction\fR. That action will be run under the default shell if the service
fails. Also commentlines starting with the hash '#' and emptylines are
allowed.
.PP
.br
If an url is set, the php-status page will create a link to that URL in the title
of the statistics-table.
.PP
.RS
url=\fBurl\fR
.RE
.PP
.br
The mailto-opion can contain one or more (seperated by colons) emailaddresses
that must be notified by mail (providing mailwarning is enabled) when
something goes wrong with this host. This option does NOT override the
mailto-option in the global conffile but appends to the emailaddress(es)
specified there.
.PP

checkservice for Debian
-----------------------

I removed the default localhost file from default installed
configfiles, because it will create localhost.dpkg-new or
localhost.dpkg-old files when you upgrade, since that host does not
exist, you would have gotten errors (bug: #80379).

Therefor I have moved the default 'localhost'-configfile to the
examples-dir (/usr/share/doc/checkservice/examples), have a look there.
